A commercial boiler deaerator is a device that is widely used for the removal of air and other dissolved gases from the feedwater to steam-generating boilers. In particular, dissolved oxygen in boiler feedwaters will cause serious corrosion damage in steam systems by attaching to the walls of metal piping and other metallic equipment and forming oxides (rust). Water also combines with any dissolved carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid that causes further corrosion. Most deaerators are designed to remove oxygen down to levels of 7 ppb by weight (0.0005 cm³/L) or less.
There are three basic types of deaerators, the tray-type, the spray-type, and the steam-flow:
The tray-type (also called the cascade-type) includes a vertical domed deaeration section mounted on top of a horizontal cylindrical vessel which serves as the deaerated boiler feedwater storage tank.  Applications range from large power industry to small commercial buildings. Best application is when condensate return is less than 50% and loads are constant.
The spray-type consists only of a horizontal (or vertical) cylindrical vessel which serves as both the deaeration section and the boiler feedwater storage tank.  Most common form of pressurized deaerator. Best stand alone application is less than 30% condensate return and loads that are constant. For system exceeding 30% condensate return, this system frequently is paired with a surge tank.
The steam-flow dearator provides guaranteed performance that is unmatched in the industry. Best for all conditions. Will provide .005cc/l feedwater regardless of condensate return percentage and load swings. Typical application is when condensate exceeds 40% or reliable performance is required.
